Starting a new 40k army - Start Collecting!

With the release of the new 'Start Collecting! (Insert Chosen Army)' boxed sets by Games Workshop I have decided to start on a new project, namely, the Tau Empire.

Before I talk about the new army I will be building I really need to point out how good value these boxed sets are and this post will be deidicated to that. If we're to look at just the ones for 40k, the factions currently included in the 'Start Collecting!' range are the; Astra Militarum, Skitarii, Tyranids, Necrons, Space Marines, and, of course, the Tau Empire.

These are some of the best deals I have ever seen offered by Games Workshop as each box set is priced at £50 and if you break down the contents of the boxes and add up the prices of purchasing them separately you see just how much you can save. Addiontally each of the bundles comes with a unique formation that allows you to use the contents of the box as a battleforged army straight away.

Lets break it down:

Price of each Starter Box Set - £50

Start Collecting! Astra Militarum

Contents - Officio Prefectus Commissar, ten Cadian Shock Troops, Cadian Heavy Weapon Team, and a Leman Russ Battle Tank
Unique Formation - The Armoured Shield

Cost of buying minatures seperately - £71
Total savings - £21

Start Collecting! Skitarii

Contents - Tech-Priest Dominus, ten Skitarii Vanguard, which can be optionally assembled as Skitarii Rangers, and an Onager Dunecrawler
Unique Formation - The Dominus Maniple

Cost of buying miniatures separately - £85.5
Total savings - £35.5

Start Collecting! Tyranids

Contents - Hive Tyrant, three Tyranid Warriors, and a ten-strong Gargoyle Brood
Unique Formation - The Hive Vanguard

Cost of buying miniatures separately - £82
Total savings - £32

Start Collecting! Necrons

Contents - Necron Overlord, a Triarch Stalker, a Scarab Swarm, and a set of twelve Necron Warriors
Unique Formation - The Retribution Phalanx

Cost of buying miniatures separately - £69
Total savings - £19

Start Collecting! Space Marines

Contents - Terminator Captain, a Venerable Dreadnought, and a ten-man Tactical Squad
Unique Formation - The Firespear Strikeforce

Cost of buying miniatures separately - £71
Total savings - £21

Start Collecting! Tau Empire

Contents - Ethereal on Hover Drone, three XV8 Crisis Battlesuits, and a ten-man Fire Warriors team (including two drones and a DS8 Support Turret)
Unique Formation - The Ethereal Honour Guard

Cost of buying miniatures separately - £93
Total Savings - £43

As you can see there are significant savings to be had with these bundles, especially the Tau one where you get nearly double the value! I have purchased the Tau box set as the value you get for such a low price is amazing. normally a Tau Crisis Suit Team would cost you £45 so for £5 more you get an Ethereal and a Fire warrior team!

If you're interested in starting a new 40k army then I would highly recommend picking up one of the box sets. At the moment there are only 6 factions represented but it would make sense for Games Workshop to add more over time.

In my next post I will be explaining my plans for my Tau army, hopefully it'll be up within a couple of days. Till next time!
